Welcome back to the USA Dog Behavior podcast! I'm Scott Sheaffer, a certified dog behaviorist specializing in all types of canine behavior issues. Today’s episode: Five Rookie Mistakes First-Time Dog Owners Make - and How to Avoid Them.

I want to talk about five really common mistakes I see first-time dog owners make.  These aren’t about bad intentions — they’re simply misunderstandings that come from being new to dog behavior.

Here's a quick perspective on this issue. I was a guest on an animal behavior podcast recently when the host spoke about how working with first time dog owners can be challenging. I reminded her that all of us, including me, were also first-time dog owners once. We all have a learning curve.

Here are five common mistakes to watch out for if you’re a first-time dog owner.

1. Thinking a dog “knows better.”
A lot of new owners assume their dog chooses to disobey. But dogs aren’t operating from guilt or moral judgment. They operate from reinforcement and habit. When owners shift their mindset to learning instead of stubbornness, everything changes.

2. Accidentally reinforcing the wrong behavior.
Here’s a classic example: a dog jumps, and the owner pets them while saying “no.” The dog thinks: jumping works. Reinforcement is about the dog’s perception, not our intention.

3. Misunderstanding socialization.
Many people think socialization means their dog should meet every dog and person possible. What dogs really need is controlled exposure. Surfaces, sounds, environments, and calm introductions matter more than chaotic greetings.

4. Hoping the dog will grow out of the behavior.
I hear this a lot: “He’ll settle when he gets older.” The truth is, dogs grow into the habits they practice. Early guidance is always easier than undoing months of repetition.

5. Giving too much freedom too soon.
New owners often want their dog to “feel at home,” so they give them full access right away. But structure is calming for dogs and humans. Routines and boundaries help a dog understand how to behave confidently.

To summarize: These mistakes are completely normal — I see them all the time in first-time dog households. Once people understand how dogs actually learn, things click quickly for dog and owner.
